Be You

Today’s post is in honor of the upcoming Track and Field National Championships in Eugene, OR.  Catch it on TV or online.

I was lucky enough to talk with Khadevis Robinson a few weeks back. He has been a professional runner for over a decade. Having experienced the highs (Olympic team in 2004, multiple national championships) and the lows (4th at Olympic trials, injury, etc), he had a lot to say in our brief 15 minutes together. In the time that these athletes give me I try to get one or two things out of them that I can pass along to you, and to the athletes I coach.  The title of this post is that “nugget” of wisdom.

The idea of “being you” is one that is really hard to stick to.  With the pressures on our lives to train, the people who question your training, and of course that little voice in the back of our head asking, “Am I doing the right training? Or enough training?”  Those are hard questions to answer, especially if the results are not coming in like you had hoped.  But you will hear him talk in the video about doing what is best by you at that point in training.  That sentiment can be ascribed to life also.  We all have decisions we need to make and we can’t possibly know the consequences of those choices.  So you make the call.  If it works out, it works out. If not, well then you just learned something and you are a better person for it.

Enjoy.
