When To Quit

The ridgeline in the middle of the photo was the objective. It didn't go for us, this time.

Not to sound too preachy, but it seems people these days give up too easily.  That is why it is so cool that we are in another running boom.  Running is hard to do, even when you get decent at it.  It is hard to keep up with, it is scary when you race, and more often than not it is wildly frustrating to improve at.  A small wonder that more and more people are choosing to compete in a variety of events from 1 mile road races to ultra distances.

So what causes us to stop doing things?  What causes us to quit?  Why might this be a good thing?

All Ages Results and Photos

A surprisingly nice evening greeted participants in the first Lincoln All Ages Track Meet of the summer.  Serving as a fundraiser for LNS Cross Country and the Lincoln Food Bank and as a tune-up for the Lincoln Mile racers from ages 5-45 competed in the low key event.

Smaller number of people than usual participated in the 4th Annual Doughnut 2k.  But those that did challenged themselves, their minds, and of course their stomachs.  Results below and photos to the right.

That Day

Read the following article from Runners World about Meb Keflezighi and his training on the way to winning this past Spring’s Boston Marathon.  A race I still, and will, go back and watch to get pumped up.

Along with that, I had the privilege this Spring of working with two of the top runners in the state of Nebraska (in addition to many other hard-working student athletes).  These two young people had great days at the Nebraska State Track Meet last weekend.

Mujtaba Mohammed may have paid his way through school with an incredible 800m run.

Jeralyn Poe continues her wonderful high school career with great performances (and competition with Katie Spencer of Millard South) in the 1600/3200

All Class Gold Medals in 3200m (10:48.8) and 1600m (5:00.06)
All Class Gold Medals in 3200m (10:48.8) and 1600m (5:00.06)

But the question I wonder about is what does it take for any athlete, of whatever ability, to achieve their best performance on a given day?

Gratitude

Special thanks to Gary Dougherty http://www.gdougherty.com
Special thanks to Gary Dougherty http://www.gdougherty.com

Been able to let the events of last week marinade for awhile.  I originally wrote this Sunday afternoon, after the marathon.  The thoughts still hold true.

Thankful that:

-I have the health, talent, and drive to run the way I do

-I have a wonderful family who is incredibly supportive of my passion

-I belong to a number of running communities that support each other

-I live in a community where fitness and being outdoors (in some shape or form) is encouraged and appreciated.

-I belong to a competitive team that is full of people of all ages, passions, and talents.  But more importantly are good people, which seem to be rare to come by.

-I have the opportunity to compete in events like this morning’s Lincoln Marathon.  That Lincoln, NE supports an event like this.  That the race is so well organized (by volunteers).  That even in a football dominated city, the race (well the first half at least) is cheered on by thousands of people.
