Friday Randomness

First things first, a bit of promotion work.  An old friend and roommate of mine, Eli Powell, is a photographer in the Denver area.  In an industry like this, it is really competitive getting business.  Fortunately for him, he is wicked talented.  Check out his site, re-post his web address on Facebook etc, recommend to friends and family out that way.

On a running note here are some images and a story to get you through your weekend.  Hope you have some good miles!

Mixed Emotions

I have no clever, or even relevant, photograph to go along with this ramble.  As a matter of fact I meant to put this up 8 days ago, but I have just been mulling it over in the intervening time to make sure I say what I mean to say.  This topic is one that has come up again and again recently in publications from USA Today to Outside Magazine to Runners World.  It has stirred up emotions in my own training group, led to conflict and discussion on some local running committees I am part of, gotten the interest of 1000s of relatively non-active folks, and has caused to me examine what the meaning of a “running race” is.

What is this topic?  It is the rising popularity of events involving the use of obstacles.  Mud Run, Tough Mudder, Warrior Dash, Zombie Run, and the names and splinters go on and on, and on.

Pawnee City Classic

Ran my first 5k in almost 7 months yesterday down in Pawnee City, NE.  For those that are new to the site I have been dealing with a very weird fatigue issue over the last 20 months or so.  I am close to having it knocked out, but still not there yet.  But, I wanted to get out and test myself in a low stress race (other events in the area included Havelock Run, Kearney Half-Marathon, Warrior Dash, and some other races). The 27th Annual Pawnee City Classic fit the bill.

2012 All-Ages #1 Results

Jared Carlson showing rare form on his way to the 2012 title. He ran his mile in 7:00, then had another lap and doughnut to go.

1st ever woman's winner Becky Tuttle.

A surprisingly nice evening met a number of participants in the first all-ages meet of 2012. Highlights were a couple of sub 5s in the mile, a close predict-a-mile, and a surprise race walk 100m.  Results are below.  Thanks for coming out.  Very big meet on Tuesday at Lincoln Southwest, hope you can make it.

The highlight of the evening was the doughnut 2k (videos and images coming soon).  We had our first two female finishers in the history of the race and a dominating event record on the men’s side.  Rebecca Tuttle won the women’s event in a close finish becoming the first lady to ever take on the 5 lap challenge.  For the men we had a number of last year’s competitors show up to try to take the crown from the defending champ, Mo Hamdan.  Lots of pre-race smack talking led up to the gun.  It was over after the first pastry was consumed.  Jared Carlson was 100m out before second place had even left the eating zone.  Combining a very unique strategy of liquid use and eating.  It was impressive.  Thanks for everyone’s support.
