Never Limit Where Running Can Take You

That is the main message I pulled from an experience I had this past Friday.  I was granted the opportunity to have a conversation with Bart Yasso, who is the Chief Running Officer (how kick ass of a job title is that?)of Runners World Magazine.  To say that 30 minutes with him was not enough would be a colossal understatement.  The stories this guy could tell. . . Man, I just eat that stuff up.

Our interview was done via Skype, sadly my Mac does not have recording capabilities.  This I did not know until 10min in and steps have been taken to make sure we avoid this in the future.  However I was able to get some audio of our conversation which can be downloaded below.  Not sure what to call this new feature; Simple Conversation, SimpleTalk, Simple______?  Read on for more below

Satisfaction of your own work, symbolized by a drink.

I PRESENT TO YOU: INTERVALE

A combination of interval and ale

intervale, boom. In the interest of full disclosure I ran the half marathon in 2000, but all finishers received this.

I am not a huge connoisseur of beer. I mean, I like beer, a lot. But I am not knowledgeable in the brewing process, or the different kinds of hops, and fermenting temperatures, etc. A lot of that interests me in a purely cosmopolitan, I like knowing stuff kind of way.

Sandhills Marathon

Just got an email about the 5th running of the Sandhills Marathon.  It is to be held 6/11/2011  This event is one of the best I have ever done, mostly because of its simplicity.  Your best source of info is their FACEBOOK page.

Basically it started when two guys were out fishing and one said hey, I have an idea (I am hoping beers and a bet were involved because so many face smashingly great ideas, in running or otherwise, start that way and something this awesome deserves a back story like that). You would have to ask Scott or Andy for the real truth.   From there, Scott Schwartz and Andy Pollock have put together an event that highlights the best of Western Nebraska.  You can read about my 2009 experience for an race report I wrote for NDORFNZ.com back in June of that year below, just click on read more. . .  As if that piece of literary genius was not enough to get you psyched out of your short shorts, there are some photos as well.

Trying to get to racing season, part 2

Clichéd photo of the ice beard

Looking back at my training log it was year ago this weekend that I set my PR for cold weather running.  Did 2.5 laps at Lake Zorinsky in Omaha (my now wife lived up there).  Not much plowing had been done, so the trail was not good.  North wind in the teens, air temp was -8 degrees, wind chill was obviously colder.  I don’t keep specifics in my logs, but this stuck with me.

Now a week ago we were blessed with the first big snowfall of the season here in Lincoln.  Most areas got about half a foot to a bit more.  It also got us two snow days at school.  I always try to take advantage of these when I can. Got up Monday and trudged off.  If there is more difficult training than running in shin deep snow, I don’t know what it is.  Usually around here we get pretty heavy, wet snow that is pain to run through.  But this particular storm had dropped some unusually light stuff on us. Trying to get to racing season, part 1

Looking to link up some posts and get to the time of year where people to get to see the winter training begin to pay off.  Some early season road races and indoor track meets will get us to the beginning of the Lincoln Track Club’s annual schedule of races:

Check out Ben Cohoon’s Leprechaun Chase

Hopefully the Winter Classic at Devaney will be on again this year after last year

If you need to see some races to get your mojo going and get you through the next 50 days of weather or so check the Lincoln Track Club site and one of my favorite trail racesAngry Cow Adventures is another option for events way off the map.
